DIABETES MELLITUS A COMMON EMERGING CONDITION

Diabetes is a metabolic disease in which there is an imbalance between insulin productions by the pancreas. There is either less or no insulin which results in high blood sugar levels, which in return damages the organs and had worse long term effects on our bodies.


TYPES OF DIABETES


There are 3 types of diabetes:

1) Type 1 diabetes
This type of diabetes starts from childhood. In this condition there is no insulin production by pancreas and is often more severe form of diabetes.
There is either damage to pancreases or auto immune process is going on which damages the body’s own cells.

2) Type 2 diabetes

This type of diabetes occurs at any age. In this condition there is little insulin and cannot meet up with the body’s need.
Insulin resistance is there so the body cannot utilize the insulin and results in elevated blood sugar levels.

3) Gestational diabetes
Diabetes which occurs in pregnancy in later half. Pregnancy hormones plays a major role in having this condition.
Gestational diabetes can leads to over sized baby and increases the risk of cesarean section and complications can occur in babies as well such as infections.

EARLY SIGNS OF DIABETES



Frequent urination

Frequent thirst
Increase hunger
Numbness of hands and feet
Blurry vision
Delay wound healing
Weight loss despite of normal or increased hunger
Feeling weak and tired
Headaches


RISK FACTORS FOR DIABETES

Family history and Genetics plays a major role for having this condition.

Other risk factors include:
Bad eating habits (consumption of more processed sugars).
Sedentary lifestyle.
Lack of exercise.
Obesity or weight gain.
Increasing age.
High blood pressure and high cholesterol.

HOW TO PREVENT DIABETES

Unfortunately type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented as it runs in the family.
But type 2 can be prevented by healthy lifestyle modifications like:
Increased physical activity.
Healthy eating habits.
Avoid over stress.
Manage your weight.
Limit alcohol intake.

Quit smoking.

HOW DIABETES CAN HARM YOU


Elevated blood sugar levels can have worst effects on our body. It can damage our organs and make the life ending complications like
Nephropathy (damage to the kidneys)
Neuropathies (nerve damage)
Retinopathies (damage to the eyes leading to even blindness if left uncontrolled)
Cardiovascular diseases even stroke
Foot infections
Fungal and yeast infections
Depression



MANAGEMENT OF DIABETES
























Unfortunately, there is no cure for diabetes. Once it happens it’s there for lifetime.
But it can be managed and controlled to prevent its further complications

1) Regular check of blood sugar levels.
2) Diet which is well balanced including fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meat, poultry).
3) Avoid taking sugar in any form. 
4) Regular exercise.
5) Control blood pressure and check cholesterol levels.

6) Exogenous insulin and diabetic medications after consulting doctor.

FOODS TO AVOID IN DIABETES




Avoids all sugar based foods like pastas, white cereals, white rice.
Carbonated drinks
Caffeine

Honey and maple syrup
Dates
Fruits such as mangoes and bananas

Consult your health team and make a proper diet plan which includes healthy meal options.


WHICH FOOD CAUSES DIABETES

Soda drinks, high sugar foods, bakery items lack nutritional value and causes a dramatic spike in blood sugar levels and leads to obesity and diabetes.

CONCLUSION

Diabetes is a long term disease having worst complications if not managed. It can be prevented and managed by lifestyle modifications and by keeping an eye on blood sugar levels.
And if not taken seriously can lead to life taking complications.
